Ivan Shemlev (1873 - 1950) was working in Alushta from June of 1918 till March of 1922. he witnessed such horrible consequences of the civil war as the "Red terror", when his son, Sergei Shmelev, a 24 years old handicapped White army officer was killed in Feodosija in 1921, famine and devastation. All this he described in his documentary epic "The Sun of the Dead". As a very well known and respected literary critic A.V. Amphiteatrov stated, "...there has never been a more frightening book in the Russian language".
