Jonathan Swift (1667 - 1745) - English writer and satirist, poet, essayist, religious and political figure. Born November 30, 1667 in Dublin, he studied at Trinity College, Dublin, in 1689 won a seat in the English literary secretary diplomat and writer Sir William Temple. Among the early works of Jonathan Swift - the famous "Tale of the barrel" (1704), publication of which cost him a place in one of the vicar of the Church of England.
In what Swift is actively involved in political debate, supporting the party of Tories and showered with jeers from the pages of the Whig journal "Examiner." In 1710 he began his "Journal to Stella", a collection of letters addressed to Esther Johnson.
In 1713, Jonathan Swift was rector of the cathedral place of St. Patrick in Dublin. Taking advantage of its relatively high position, he tried his best to protect the Irish from the English crown harassment. In 1726 the writer published his masterpiece - a satire in the form of the adventure novel "Journey Lemuel Gulliver, a surgeon first and then the captain of several ships." This book has long lost its topicality, but is considered one of the classic works of children's literature.
